Synopsis

“Three of the four decades of my life have been spent amidst a tragic social transition in Sri Lankan history. Two militant uprisings, one by the Sinhalese and the other by the Tamils, claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. The infamous Black July in 1983 triggered a civil war between the LTTE and Sri Lankan forces that lasted nearly three decades. The war resulted in over 100,000 deaths and displaced more than 300,000 people. However, as time passed, I realized there was an untold aspect of this human catastrophe that needed to be shared. For years, I visualized telling this story in my mind, waiting for the right moment. When the war finally ended, and the roads between the North and South reopened, I felt it was the perfect time to bring my vision to life. After 30 years, the Tamil people in the North could now travel to Colombo with ease. During their journey, I saw something extraordinary, and it struck me as an ideal way to begin my narrative. I chose to depict the Tamil girl’s first trip to Colombo as the film’s opening scene, symbolizing her personal journey while also introducing the central theme. I drew a parallel between her character and an ancient myth, setting the stage for the film’s deeper exploration of the complex realities of post-war Sri Lanka.”
