- “Viyasiduru” (Sinhala: වියසිදුරු; lit. ‘Miracle of the Light and Darkness’) is a 2023 Sri Lankan Sinhala crime romantic thriller film, marking the directorial debut of Prabhath Agampodi. The film stars Kalana Gunasekara and Shalani Tharaka in the lead roles, with an ensemble cast featuring Lakshman Mendis, Thumindu Dodantenna, and Dharmapriya Dias. Produced by Piyumi Agampodi under Kaputa Productions for the University of Kelaniya, the project holds the distinction of being the first narrative feature film produced by a Sri Lankan university. Crafted as a postmodernist cinema experiment, the movie is the result of collaborative efforts by the university’s Department of Fine Arts faculty, students, and alumni. With its innovative approach and compelling narrative, Viyasiduru has garnered international acclaim and received several awards globally.
Synopsis
Set against the scenic backdrop of Tissamaharama in Hambantota, Viyasiduru unravels a tale of crime, romance, and suspense. The story follows the intersecting lives of its protagonists amidst themes of light and darkness, both literal and metaphorical. As a love story blooms between two central characters, their lives take a perilous turn when they are drawn into a web of crime.
Through a postmodernist lens, the film explores the complexities of human relationships, morality, and the inevitable confrontation with one’s inner demons. With its layered narrative and psychological depth, Viyasiduru offers a thought-provoking cinematic experience that challenges conventional storytelling, blending romance and thriller elements seamlessly.
